Lesson 4- The Communion Table

Communion-The Lords Table

           Water Baptism and Communion are the churches two ordinances.  Baptism is observed at the beginning of the Christian life, and communion is observed throughout the Christian life.

Titles Given to this Ordinance:

*       The Lord’s Supper 1 Corinthians 11:20
*       The Lord’s Table 1 Corinthians 10:21
*       The Communion 1 Corinthians 10:16
*       The Eucharist, which means “thanksgiving” and “the Sacrament”
Jesus instituted this: “Do this in remembrance of me.” The early church practiced it daily.  Communion is an ordinance instituted by Christ to commemorate His death until He comes at the second coming.
*       Matthew 26:26-29
*       Mark 14:22-26
*       Luke 22:15-20
*       1 Corinthians 11:23-26
*       Acts 2:42-47
*       Luke 22:19
*       1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Symbols: The Bread and the Wine

  The Bread: represents Jesus’ body broken for us.  It fulfills the Passover Lamb, and all other sacrificial bodies of animals under the Old Testament.  It also symbolizes the Church, the body of Christ.  1 Corinthians 10:16-17, 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, 1 Corinthians 11:28-29, Luke 22:17-20, Matthew 26:26, John 6:48-56
The Wine: represents the precious blood of Jesus that introduced and manifested the New testament/ New Covenant.  His blood was shed for remission of sins and to manifest spiritual life for spiritually dead man.  1 Corinthians 10:16, 1 Corinthians 11:25, Luke 22:17-20, Leviticus 17:11, Matthew 26:2, Mark 14:24

The Communion symbolizes:

1.     The death of Christ for our sins and sicknesses.  Matthew 26:26-28, 1 Corinthians 10:16-17, 1 Peter 2:24
2.     Personal fellowship between God and Man.  1 Corinthians 10:16-17
3.     Union of all believers in Christ.  Matthew 26:29, Luke 22:18, Mark 14:25, 1 Corinthians 11:26
4.     Communion- a partnership, fellowship, associate. Covenant- adoption, we take his name and all his authority and rights and privileges.
5.     Fellowship- 2 Corinthians 13:14
The Communion emblems used are not literally turned into the real blood and body of Christ as some teach.

Receiving Communion is a celebration of our covenant with God.  Hebrews 8:6

A better covenant established upon better promises.  2 Corinthians 13:14
